BROWNSVILLE - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Fort Brown Station saved the life of an illegal immigrant who was struggling to swim in the Brownsville Ship Channel Monday.

The agents were working in the area when they encountered three illegal immigrants along the edge of the Brownsville Ship Channel. One of the men notified agents that another member of their group was having trouble swimming. Agents quickly began searching for the man and notified the U.S. Coast Guard.

Agents located the man in the middle of the channel struggling to stay afloat. One of the agents grabbed a floatation device, swam out to the man and safely pulled him to shore.

The illegal immigrants will be processed and returned to their countries of origin. So far in fiscal year 2012, Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley Sector have saved the lives of more than 100 illegal immigrants.

To report suspicious activity, call the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector's toll-free telephone number at 800-863-9382.
