WESLACO - Border Patrol agents are holding a young boy they found abandoned by the river last night. They're now working to figure out who he is.

Border Patrol Spokesperson Rosie Huey says agents came across a group of adults near the river last night. A young boy was with them. Huey says when the adults saw the agents, they abandoned the child and fled back into Mexico. Huey could not confirm the age of the child.

She says he is being held at the Weslaco Border Patrol station. Huey says if it's determined the child is from Mexico, authorities will work with the Mexican consulate to reunite him with his parents.

If the child is from a country other than Mexico, Huey says the Texas Department of Health and Human Services will likely get involved to place him.
