FALFURRIAS - Brooks County Judge Raul Ramirez fears many of his employees will leave their jobs once their health benefits end.

Brooks County employees will lose their health benefits at the end of this month.

County officials said the loss of health benefits is part of cost-cutting measures. The county cut some benefits last year. Officials said it's time for more cuts.

Brooks County commissioners' court cut the budget by 20 percent in 2013. They slashed salaries by 3 percent and dropped all dependants from the employee health plans.

Ramirez said there is no money left in the coffers. He said the benefits account has a balance of only $106,000, enough to cover approximately two months worth of claims.

Part of the problem is a drop in property tax revenues, officials said. According to an online budget report filed by the county, they expect a drop of approximately $700,000 in tax revenues this year.
