BROOKS COUNTY - Brooks County investigators are reporting an increase in attacks against illegal immigrants.
The abuse is happening at the hands of civilians, officials said.
Brooks County constables said the abuse may be in response to the frustration over the increased foot traffic and destruction of property by illegal immigrants.
Brooks County Precinct 3 Constable Pablo Solis said several residents witnessed one case of abuse.
"We're approaching the vicinity where this incident took place," he said. "Neighbors here witnessed the harassment."
The incident happened along Highway 285 west of Falfurrias. He said witnesses reported seeing a young illegal immigrant walking along the highway. He was trying to open a can of food with a rock.
Solis said the witnesses called police when they saw a group of men tie up the immigrant.
"If this illegal was treated in this manner on a public road, can you imagine how he could have been treated out there in the sticks?" he said.
The men could face multiple charges if they are caught, Solis said.
Solis said the abuse is becoming more common.
"They're tied up, apprehended, some at gun point, some with knives," Solis said.
Solis said once immigrants are on American soil they have the same rights as U.S. citizens.
Solis said the immigrant who was tied up is in a detention center. He is cooperating in the investigation to find his aggressors.
