MISSION - Mission police are processing a stolen truck for evidence. A dive team pulled a Ford F-250 out of the Rio Grande this afternoon. It was located under the Anzaludas Bridge.
Smugglers plunged the truck into the river, after a high-speed chase last night. Investigators said the smugglers had help waiting for them in rafts. The driver and another man in the truck got away with some of the drugs they were transporting.
"When an officer is in a chase like this and there's rafts there, you always have to think that on the other side there may be some people with guns," said Corporal Manuel Casas of the Mission Police Department. "There may be some snipers. We don't know what's out there. So when we get out there, we always have to be in check. We have to be careful what we do. We don't just rush in. We have to scan the area before we move in."
The recovered pickup was taken to the Mission Police Department. Police pulled bundle after bundle of marijuana out of the truck. The drugs weighed a total of 687 pounds.
Police say some of the bundles are marked and packaged differently than the others. Investigators suspect different groups of smugglers may be teaming up to send loads across at the same time. We're told a levy road behind Granjeno has become a favorite new route for smugglers.
