WESLACO - Customs and Border Protection officials are advertising in Central America to deter people from trying to cross into the U.S. illegally. The campaign is intended to show the dangers to children and families.
The ads will run through the summer. A recent tide of Central Americans illegally entering the U.S. has overwhelmed the federal immigration system. Unlike undocumented Mexican immigrants, who are often immediately deported, the U.S. detains and processes Central Americans. They're eventually released and given a month to report to immigration offices.
