BROWNSVILLE - Officials with the city of Brownsville are remodeling a downtown building to provide services to illegal immigrants being released from Border Patrol custody.

The building would provide added space and augment the efforts going on at Immaculate Conception Church.

City officials said work started at the old store to make the structure code-compliant. The municipality bought the Casa del Nylon building on Adams Street years ago, but it was never occupied.

Workers will install air-conditioning units and redo the electrical wiring, among other things.
