PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) A corrupt former Rhode Island mayor is being freed from prison early as part of a complicated deal struck with state and federal prosecutors after an appeals court threw his 2012 conviction into question.

Charles Moreau is the former mayor of the financially troubled city of Central Falls. He was ordered freed Friday after first pleading guilty to a new charge of accepting a bribe and being sentenced to time served.

Judge John McConnell then vacated Moreau's 2012 conviction, allowing him to walk free.

He served just under one year of a two-year sentence.

Moreau was convicted of accepting a gratuity from a city contractor. A federal appeals court last year struck down the same charge in an unrelated case. Other courts have said accepting gratuities is a crime.
