BROWNSVILLE - Laredo schools got the best of a pair of Valley basketball power squads and only Edinburg North was able to advance on the opening night of boys' UIL tournament action. The Cougars got their eight point win on the road at the expense of the Hanna Eagles 48-40. In 5A games at neutral sites, both Sharyland and Nikki Rowe were stopped by Laredo teams. Sharyland picked a bad time to go cold, in overtime, as the Rattlers failed to score a point in the extra session of a 55-42 loss to Nixon in Alice. The Roma basketball floor was unkind to the Warriors in a 61-58 defeat at the hands of United. In other Monday action, Tuloso-Midway handcuffed 4A Hidalgo 73-64. Utopia eliminated San Isidro 58-45.
