BROWNSVILLE - A couple is in trouble with the law after police officers found them smoking marijuana near their child, officials said.
Brownsville police officers pulled over the couple's car after they noticed the tags were expired.
Julio Guerrero and Cynthia Pena and their child were in the car when officers approached, police said.
Officers smelled marijuana and found a marijuana cigarette and a small bag with drugs near the child.
Officers arrested the couple. The child was turned over to relatives.
Doctors said research proves marijuana poses numerous health risks for children. Second-hand smoke could cause lifelong lung disease. The toxins in marijuana can cause developmental and behavioral problems.
