HARGILL - The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department is still searching for a missing county-issued assault weapon. The gun was stolen along with a deputy's patrol unit early Sunday. Hidalgo County deputies responded to a disturbance call at a home in Hargill early Sunday morning.
The deputy's white Ford Expedition was stolen at the scene while the deputy gathered information for a report related to the disturbance call. The alleged car thief and the vehicle were recovered a few hours later; however, the AR-15 type assault rifle and ammunition that were inside the patrol unit were missing.
The whole situation left Guadalupe Gonzalez, a homeowner in the area, worried.
"I think they should be more careful. I don't know understand how he jumped into the car and took the weapon. That tells you something."
Gonzalez is concerned about the type of person who is brave enough to steal from a sheriff's deputy.
"If they're (the alleged car thief) willing to do that to a cop, they can sure do it to us." She said.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's department tells CHANNEL FIVE NEWS they have made the search for the missing weapon a top priority. The alleged car thief is expected to face a judge soon.
