HIDALGO COUNTY - Mission police say a teenager took a loaded handgun to a junior high school in Palmhurst because he felt threatened.
The incident happened on Thursday at Rafael Cantu Jr. Middle School.
School officials sent letters to parents notifying them about the incident. Mission Consolidated Independent School District officials said authorities were called immediately after the gun was discovered.
Mission Police Department interim Chief Robert Dominguez said the 13-year-old brandished the pistol before officers confiscated the weapon.
The teen surrendered the handgun without incident, officials said.
Police said parents can prevent cases like the one at the junior high.
"Get a little bit more involved with your children. In this case, it's tragic to see a young man that had no type of criminal record before be tainted with something like this," Dominguez said.
The student's case will go through the juvenile court system.
