Health experts say people living with diabetes are at a higher risk of suffering serious COVID-19 complications.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Sheetal Decaria said studies show people with the disease are two to three times more likely to experience serious complications such as hospitalization, needing breathing tubes and even death.

Decaria said people with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are suffering complications from the virus at almost equal rates due to glucose levels.

"Your immune system gets depressed or it doesn't work as well if your glucose is very high or uncontrolled," Decaria said. "That leads to complications in other organ systems and also diabetes is a proinflammatory state so what we're seeing is people that have diabetes are getting a lot more inflammation and that's what's causing a lot of problems with COVID-19."
