Driver Causes Fatal Crash near La Joya after Evading Law Enforcement

UPDATE (4 p.m.): The Department of Public Safety is revealing the names of the two victims killed in the crash that took place near La Joya Wednesday morning.  

Leonel Martinez Jr., 45, and Aurora Chavez, 69, were driving along Expressway 83 when they were hit by a Ford Expedition. 

DPS Lieutenant Johnny Hernandez says the driver fled from law enforcement during a traffic stop.   

Deputies are still searching for him at this hour.

NEAR LA JOYA – A traffic stop quickly turned into a deadly accident after the driver attempted to evade arrest and drove off.

Two people are dead and five have been transported to the hospital.

It happened on Expressway 83 near La Joya Wednesday morning.

Authorities are searching for the suspect who is still on the run.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Johnny Hernandez says the driver of a Ford Expedition drove off during a traffic stop and a chase ensued.

The driver lost control driving eastbound and went into the median, hitting a white Nissan going westbound.  

Drivers are urged to find alternate routes as the roads leading into La Joya are expected to be closed off to traffic for the next two to three hours.
