HIDALGO COUNTY - A 16-year-old La Joya student is fighting for her life after she was struck by a vehicle on La Homa Road.
The girl had just exited the school bus when the driver of Chevy Cobalt did not stop for the bus. The girl was crossing the street when she was struck, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.
The incident happened at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The victim was taken to McAllen Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.
The driver of the Cobalt also was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No charges have been filed yet.
La Joya Independent School District officials released a statement on the incident.
"As we learn more information, the district will not confirm the identity of the student until law enforcement officials have done so. Any information about the nature of the case will be handled through normal law enforcement protocol. At this time, La Joya ISD law enforcement officials are working closely with authorities as preliminary investigations take place to learn more about the incident," the statement said.
