CAMERON COUNTY - A construction project near Rio Hondo will force drivers to take a 30-minute detour, officials said.
The construction project should fix drainage problems in the area, officials said. Local residents said it also may drain their wallets.
"It's a big problem because we have to go past Rio Hondo, all the way to FM 1847 and all the way around. Everyone knows gas is a big expense, it's killing us. The older people, they just can't afford it, a lot of people in Arroyo City are on fixed incomes," area resident Michelle McAbee said.
Drivers who travel into Arroyo City on FM 2925 will have to take the detour this week. The road connects the town with Rio Hondo and San Benito.
The lead engineer on the project said the work will decrease the risk of floods in the area.
The road is expected to reopen on Friday.
