STARR COUNTY - Rio Grande City police on Tuesday uncovered a bunker with approximately one ton of marijuana.

Police said an investigation led them to a house on Canyon Street. The officers said a suspect on the backyard fled leaving behind some bundles of marijuana.

Officers had a drug-sniffing dog brought to the property. The dog led officers to an area with a small opening on the ground.

The officers found a bunker 6 feet deep by 7 feet wide. Inside officers found bundles of marijuana.

"It is a septic tank. They canceled out one of the pipes. They put a steel door on top," Rio Grande Police Lt. Elizandro Bermudez said.

"We have four or five guys here and then we got some other guys out in the street. We feel pretty well protected. When it's something like this nobody wants to come home," Bermudez said of the police presence in the area.

Investigators are tracking down the owner of the house.

The man who ran from officers on Tuesday got away. Investigators searched other properties but came up empty handed.

Officials said they expect to make some arrests in the next few weeks.
