EDINBURG - It's a new plan to protect children in Edinburg. The school district has teamed up with county leaders to build a safety barrier around Harwell Middle School, where two boys were shot last month.
The safety barrier around Harwell will be a dirt wall that is about 10-feet high. Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios says the county has agreed to provide the dirt.
All this comes after two Harwell Middle School students were shot by two men sighting their rifles in the area. The gunfire came from a nearby deer lease. The bullets traveled the distance to school grounds last month, hitting the boys. Both were injured and hospitalized.
Palacios says the dirt barrier is the best way to prevent another accident. They plan to start construction in the next 10 to 14 days and expect to have the project complete in 40 to 60 days.
