EDINBURG - Police officers will hit Edinburg streets tonight armed with a list of registered sex offenders who live in the city. They want to make sure the offenders follow a new city ordinance.
The new Edinburg city ordinance dictates that all sex offenders must place a sign with the words "no candy" on their front yards. They also must turn off their lights.
The ordinance also applies to those offenders who are no longer on parole or probation.
"It requires them to shut their lights off, stay indoors, not answer their door and they have to have a sign that's 9 1/2 by 11 inches with 2-inch letters that read, ‘no candy' on the front of their property," Edinburg Police Department Police Officer Arturo Montemayor said.
Some offenders are still required to report the to the Hidalgo County courthouse, he said.
