SAN ANTONIO (AP) First lady Michelle Obama is heading to San Antonio to participate in a growing celebration of the area's high school seniors who are committing themselves to higher education.
Obama is the featured attraction Friday at the city's "College Signing Day." The event, now in its fourth year, is part of Mayor Julian Castro's push to improve high school graduation rates and increase the number of area residents with college degrees.
About 2,100 high school seniors are expected at the pep rally-like event at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
It's intended to be the academic counterpart to the annual hoopla when high school athletes choose their colleges.
The first lady is expected to talk about the importance of pursuing and completing some form of higher education.
