HIDALGO COUNTY - The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday revealed that fish caught recently at Donna Lake and surrounding canals are still contaminated with PCBs.
Scientists with the EPA captured hundreds of fish two months ago. The fish were tested for PCB contamination. The chemical can cause cancer, officials said.
"Seventy-five percent of the fish that we caught came back contaminated. ... That's significant. Basically ... if you catch four fish, three of them are going to be contaminated," EPA Environmental Scientist Rafael Cassanova said.
"That's why we're telling people not to eat the fish."
Based on the data from the fish and from soil samples, EPA teams now are focusing on a section of canal south of the lake.
