MCALLEN - A former Hidalgo County sheriff's deputy is out on bond. Gerardo Duran was arrested on drug conspiracy charges. He appeared before a federal judge this morning.
Duran's new court-appointed lawyer waived his preliminary hearing. The ex-deputy's first court-appointed attorney reported a conflict of interest and had to be replaced.
Three other now-former law enforcement officers are facing charges in the case. Federal agents state the men, who were members of an Hidalgo County drug taskforce, accepted bribes to provide escorts for drug loads.
One of the men is still in custody. Two others, who were part of the Mission Police Department, are already out on bond.
