RAYMONDVILLE - The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash of a small airplane in Willacy County.

The Cessna 172M crashed on a field off FM 490, about a quarter mile west of Business 77.

The pilot, Cesar Hernandez of Raymondville, was taken to a hospital.

Witnesses reported hearing the engine sputter before the crash. The pilot had taken off from Bell Airfield, about a mile away from the accident site.

Juan Cardenas witnesses the crash. He rushed to the plane and helped pull Hernandez out of the cockpit.

Hernandez's wife said she was driving by the field when she saw her husband's plane. She said he had taken off for a two-hour flight.
