CORPUS CHRISTI - A 32-year-old Falfurrias man was sentenced for his role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in the death of a Mexican national.
Lewey Martinez was ordered to serve about 9.5 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Prosecutors said Martinez arranged for guides to assist groups of illegal immigrants around the Falfurrias checkpoint and then drive them to his property.
According to investigators, in September 2011, one man was dead or nearly dead due to exposure and dehydration. Martinez admitted he and two others drove the man's body to a public intersection, and he later used a payphone to notify police about the body.
