CAMERON COUNTY - A Rio Hondo family is preparing to bury a teenager after he was accidentally shot and killed just days before the New Year.
Ricardo Ramos, 18, was accidentally shot by his 13-year-old cousin Sunday afternoon. The shooting happened a few feet away from Ramos' home. Officials said the cousin was hunting around the house. They believe he stumbled and accidentally pulled the trigger on his rifle.
"I never thought this was gong to happen to him. It just happened so fast. So I didn't get to say goodbye and that's the saddest thing anybody can go through," Ramos' sister Felicia Garduno said. She was away from the Rio Grande Valley when the incident happened.
"It's just sad that the boy was shooting at a bird and that the boy was outside and he accidentally shot him in the head," Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said.
"My cousin is taking it hard. Or course, he was attached to my little brother and it's hard but it was an accident," Garduno said.
Garduno said her brother was a roper and loved the outdoors. He was a senior at Rio Hondo High School.
"He was a great person. Anybody you can ask can tell you some great things about him. He was always joking around, making people laugh. He had a great sense of humor. It's very hard on us right now," Garduno said.
The viewings will happen at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at San Benito Funeral Home on Williams Road. A burial Mass will happen at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Rio Hondo.
