HARLINGEN - Fire investigators in Harlingen are working to learn more about an apartment fire on the east side of the city.
The blaze broke out at the Grimes Apartment Complex near Grimes Avenue around 7 p.m. Saturday. Several apartment units were damaged.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with one man who was inside his apartment when the fire began to spread. Mario Martinez said a neighbor knocked on his door and told him about the fire.
Martinez told us, "We took off with no shoes or nothing, but we got out. And when we got out, we didn't expect a fire like that. We thought it was going to be a small fire. You don't ever think it's going to be that close."
The complex managers are putting the families affected by the fire in new apartment units.
