HIDALGO COUNTY - Fire crews from Alton, Mission, La Joya and Sullivan City responded to a pit fire Monday afternoon near Alton.
Fire officials said plastic, paper and other trash fueled the fire.
The strong winds helped the fire spread, officials said.
"The wind was definitely against us today," Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez said.
Firefighters called in heavy equipment to help battle the blaze.
"We cut a couple fire lines. We're very thankful that we have our Precinct 3 help with the dozers. They were out there and cut great lines for us so we were able to cut off the fire and then smother with the water and foam that we have from the fire departments," Martinez said.
Fire trucks shuttled water to the site.
Martinez said the property owner has a history of burn violations. The man was issued yet another citation Monday.
Hidalgo County is under a temporary burn ban that will last through the end of this week.
