EDINBURG - The First & Goal "Game of the Week" lived up to the billing as Edinburg North edged Economedes 21-20 in a district 30-5A opener. The Jaguars had lined up to try a two-point conversion after closing within one point, then went for the kick after a penalty and were unable to convert. The one point was the difference and improves the Cougars to 3-and-0 for the season. In other district openers, Juarez-Lincoln edged Palmview 17-15 to join Donna and La Joya as first week winners in 30-5A. PSJA Memorial improved to 3-and-0 with a 62-28 decision over PSJA. McAllen knocked off Rowe 40-21. That leaves the Bulldogs, Wolverines, PSJA North and McAllen Memorial with 1-and-0 marks in 31-5A. Harlingen is on the board with the first win of the season after stopping Rivera 38-3. Los Fresnos beat Hanna 41-14 and Brownsville Veterans Memorial blanked Porter 17-0 in other 32-5A contests. Harlingen South secured a 32-5A victory on Thursday. Non-district finals included Mission coming back to force overtime with Tuloso-Midway, then winning in two extra sessions 31-24. Sharyland beat Alexander 59-21. Mission Veterans Memorial won at Zapata 42-28. Valley View is 3-and-0 after rallying past Hidalgo 16-14. Mercedes -13, La Feria -3. Grulla -27, PSJA Southwest -6. Roma -34, Cigarroa -0. Raymondville got the winning touchdown to edge Port Isabel 19-13. Sinton stormed Rio Hondo 48-27. Progreso ended a 14-game losing streak by beating MMA 39-14. Lyford -43, Santa Rosa -14. La Villa -41, St. Joseph's -29. Santa Maria snapped a 12-12 tie and won at London School 20-12. Agua Dulce -31, Monte Alto -7.
