McALLEN - Upper Valley 5A basketball teams were swept out of the UIL playoffs in the first round Tuesday night as McAllen Memorial and Palmview followed Monday losses by Sharyland and Rowe. Not all 5A teams were unsuccessful as Edinburg, Harlingen and Harlingen South recorded victories. But, the early, first round departure of all four 30-5A teams to Laredo area schools was especially disappointing. Memorial opened a 13-2 lead at home to Alexander, but led by just two at the half time break before falling 55-47. Palmview was stopped in Rio Grande City by Martin 63-49. Edinburg rallied at home to eliminate Porter 68-60. The Bobcats will face United in the area round. Harlingen advanced to a game with Alexander after a 63-48 decision over Los Fresnos. Harlingen South had its way with Weslaco 54-26. The Hawks get an area meeting with Nixon. Valley 4A teams were a pocket of strength on Tuesday. Roma rolled over Flour Bluff 67-34. Brownsville Veterans Memorial won the school's first playoff game with a 53-51 overtime win over Ray in Raymondville. Calallen knocked off Weslaco East 54-43. Three lower level teams were also bi-district victims. Miller bounced Port Isabel 88-59. Orange Grove was ten better than La Feria, 62-52. And in class A play, Comstock defeated Lasara 52-33.
