NEW ORLEANS (AP) Ronald Reagan may be the undisputed hero of the modern Republican Party, but Republicans don't always agree on just what example the 40th president set for them as they try to end a presidential losing streak in 2016.

The divide is on display again this weekend at a national conservative summit in Louisiana.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz told Republican Leadership Conference delegates on Saturday that Reagan is an example of staunch conservatism, even if that means fighting to the point of a partial government shutdown as Cruz did last fall.

Party elder Haley Barbour told the same crowd that Reagan's success was the result of compromise, even with Democrats. Barbour is a former national GOP chairman and worked in the Reagan White House.

Cruz won the conference's presidential straw poll.
