HARLINGEN - Former Harlingen Police Chief Tom Whitten has turned down the city's latest offer to return to the job.
Last week the city commission voted to give Whitten his old job back at the same pay. Whitten left in December to take a job in El Paso. He said he had to deal with some family issues.
Whitten put his name back into consideration when the city began looking for his replacement.
City officials on Wednesday issued a news release saying Whitten changed his mind, declining the offer and deciding to stay in El Paso.
Acting Chief Stephen Mayer will continue in the department's top spot until the commission names a new permanent chief.
