Angel Roque is a former GEAR UP student who is willing, able and excited about giving back.
Angel says "as past GEAR UP alumni, what we do here is we work with these kids that are new GEAR UP students and we try to guide them and teach them what we know."
Angel is a 2011 graduate of Port Isabel High School.
He now attends UT Brownsville and takes time out of his busy college schedule to volunteer at his old stomping grounds at Port Isabel Middle School.
Angel was one of these kids back in the day when he was a middle school student himself.
He wants to make sure these kids get it.
"What we have learned is that we have been given so much we have to give back to them so that's what we try to do. We try to implement different techniques to solving not just one problem, but different types of problems so they can get it in a different way."
Angel's main tasks are to tutor and mentor these kids who are being taught the importance of attending college.
"Of course we do the mentoring but also we have implemented 2 different programs which is the lunch bunch and the book club."
"Lunch box what we teach the students is about college readiness. High school readiness and preparedness and for the book club we notice a lot of kids don't or are not really into reading or they lack the skills for that."
Angel says on the days he's here...he tutors and mentors as many kids as he possibly can.
"We go in to different classes so we work with every single student"
And working with every single student is actually helping Angel meet his goal of becoming a math teacher.
