FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) A chaplain at a West Texas post has been sentenced to six months of confinement after pleading guilty to assault and battery on a female civilian.

Officials at Fort Bliss on Wednesday night announced the penalty for Maj. Geoffrey Alleyne, who's been in the military for 24 years.

Officials say the charges stem from a series of encounters last year between Alleyne and a civilian employee who worked as an assistant to other chaplains.

Alleyne pleaded guilty to assault and battery against a civilian employee on Fort Bliss, making a false official statement and conduct unbecoming an officer.

Fort Bliss Chaplain Lt. Col. Karen Meeker says the Chaplain Corps regrets the incident.
