EDCOUCH - Police say a man's efforts to hide in a tiny town didn't get him far. He's now in jail facing a slew of charges.
A call to the Edcouch Police Department tip lines led to an unusual arrest.
"Late last night, we got a call from a concerned citizen about this individual that was driving around very erratically," says Edcouch police Chief Eloy Cardenas.
"We usually try to treat everything as routine, but obviously as for last night, it was anything but routine," says Cardenas.
When officers got called to Lopez Street and made contact with Elijah Salazar, a struggle broke out. Then Salazar bit one of the officers. This wasn't his first run in with the law.
"During the investigation to try to find out who this man was, we later found out that the individual was, in fact, a parole violator, had been so for a while. In fact, after we ran his rap sheet, we learned that the guy had 18 prior arrests," says Cardenas.
Salazar has been arrested for petty theft, marijuana possession, aggravated robbery, sexual assault and two murder charges.
"This guy's 22 years old, so something's wrong here with this individual. Obviously he doesn't play by the rules, and he showed us that last night," says Cardenas.
Salazar faces a charge for assaulting a public servant for biting the officer. The officer is OK.
"We're very fortunate that our citizens are very cooperative whenever they see something out of line," says Cardenas.
Cardenas says he thinks Salazar may have been trying to hide out in Edcouch but he picked the wrong town.
