LUDOWICI, Ga. (AP) Two Army soldiers have pleaded guilty in a southeast Georgia courtroom to fatally shooting a former military colleague and his girlfriend to protect an anti-government militia group.
Pvt. Christopher Salmon was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole Thursday after he pleaded guilty to malice murder charges. Sgt. Anthony Peden also pleaded guilty but will be sentenced at a later date.
Salmon testified that he shot Michael Roark twice in the head after Peden killed Roark's girlfriend, 17-year-old Tiffany York.
Salmon faced Roark's parents in the courtroom and said, "I'm sorry I killed your son."
Salmon says Roark and York were killed because of fears they planned to tell police about a militia group formed by disgruntled Fort Stewart soldiers.
