GEAR UP is an important program, getting kids ready for college. Beatrice Ramirez is a proud GEAR UP grad from Rio Grande City. She now attends UTPA in Edinburg and says GEAR UP got her college ready.
"GEAR UP influenced me in so many ways since 8th grade when I started getting involved. I saw some kids already wearing college t shirts and I was so confused like what am I going to do?"
But it didn't take Beatrice long to get into the swing of things. She says GEAR UP taught her how to get organized.
"that's one thing that I liked about GEAR UP you know, how they always pushed us to be really into our work, recording everything like with the planners and that's what influenced me to be more organized."
Beatrice says thanks to GEAR UP, she also had a chance to see what a real university looked like while still in high school.
"I still remember my first trip to UTB Brownsville. That was one of the universities that we went and it was my second semester of my 7th grade year and I was just so amazed. I saw the book store, the cafeteria, the dorms."
Beatrice says she has her future all planned out
"I really look up to Letty Garza from Channel Five. She is one and I've seen her dedication to this program, in many times and on TV and my major is mass communication and I plan to take your job one day."
But one thing Beatrice does know is that she loves the GEAR UP program and plans to give back to her community.
"Especially for the GEAR UP kids, just telling them our experiences. what we went through with GEAR UP and our advice to give them, you know? In order to get into this university, you need this and this and this but GEAR UP is here. GEAR UP is here to help you.
