Angel Roque is somewhat of an angel. He spends a lot of his free time giving back to the school that gave him so much.

Port Isabel Junior High is where GEAR UP gave Angel his dreams about attending college

"What I believe that GEAR UP taught us was they got us ready for those undergraduate programs and for higher education and also they taught us the importance of math and science and how important to the real world."

All that talk about science and math during his GEAR UP years talked him into realizing his dream. He is now attending UT Brownsville and is majoring in mathematics and plans to be a math teacher.

"This is basically it. I want to be a math teacher later on in the future and this just serves as a practice for that and it's getting me ready and I can see the different view points of the child of a student and now I can have an idea when I become a teacher what I have to target."

Angel tells us he loves being around kids and he says kids love being around someone closer to their age.

"I think it's because I think that because we are not as old as some of the teachers they think that they can connect a lot better with us and that's what we we're hoping because we are at a closer generation that they are able to communicate better with us a lot more."

Angel says communication is key with these kids and that's what's going to realize his dreams.
