WESLACO – The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed the first child flu death of the season in Texas.

The agency says the 5-year-old who died from the flu is from Region 11, which includes the Rio Grande Valley and more than 10 other counties from Corpus Christi to Laredo.

"It's going to be a lot more severe coming up, plus in the southern hemisphere there's been more flu compared to last year in the southern hemisphere; and I know the strains can be slightly different from the south to the north, but we do look at both hemispheres to gage it to what to expect for the upcoming season,” explained Dr. Emilie Prot, the regional medical director for Public Health Region 11.

Doctors recommend everyone older than six months should get vaccinated against the flu.
