FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Before the Texas Republican Senate candidates face the voters again, they'll be facing the state's GOP convention. David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz are both set to address the convention today. They are meeting in a July 31 runoff in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson. No candidate was able to get a majority in last month's primary.
HOUSTON (AP) U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk is telling fellow Democrats to ignore those who say the party can't win in Texas. The former Dallas mayor addressed the state convention yesterday in Houston. He's urging the party to get out the vote this fall for President Barack Obama and other races down the ballot.
WASHINGTON (AP) The long perjury trial of former baseball great Roger Clemens could be nearing its end. The judge says he hopes to get the case to the jury by Tuesday. The pace has been sluggish so far. The defense plans to wrap up Monday, then the government can call rebuttal witnesses. Clemens' wife, Debbie, was on the stand yesterday.
DALLAS (AP) A bestselling author is celebrating his 35th year of ministry with a Dallas church that includes 30,000 members. T.D. Jakes was honored with a black tie gala last night at the Winspear Opera House. He's senior pastor of The Potter's House. The bishop has written bestselling books and produced several films. He was also involved in the remake of Whitney Houston's last film. Today's also his 55th birthday.
