HOUSTON (AP) Authorities say a woman and her 7-year-old daughter have died in a Houston-area house fire. The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the blaze began around midnight yesterday near Aldine. The woman's husband was hospitalized with burns after authorities believe he tried to rescue her and the girl.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) A Mexican man has been accused of trying to smuggle five suspected illegal immigrants to San Antonio on a charter airplane. Prosecutors say 39-year-old Jorge Gallegos-Avila remains in custody on charges of harboring and transporting illegal immigrants. Gallegos-Avila was arrested in June near McAllen-Miller International Airport.

DICKINSON, Texas (AP) The death of a 5-year-old Southeast Texas girl who drank lighter fluid has been ruled an accident. Dickinson police say no charges are expected against the mother of Kyndal-Rae Eldridge. Authorities say the girl died Tuesday at a Houston hospital after she drank lighter fluid from an unmarked water bottle on Saturday.

AUBURN, Maine (AP) A Dallas-area fire official has been picked to be the new fire chief in Auburn, Maine. A search committee member says Frank Roma will start his new job in September. Roma spent 21 years as an assistant chief in the Dallas suburb of McKinney.
