BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) Authorities say a guard at a Southeast Texas prison is in serious but stable condition after being attacked by an inmate. The Department of Criminal Justice says Officer David Logan was assaulted Tuesday at the Stiles Unit in Beaumont. Investigators say 42-year-old inmate Rey Barrera was in administrative segregation when he removed his hand restraints, got out of his cell and attacked Logan.
HOUSTON (AP) A new system will be used to block phone calls from inside two Texas prisons where cellphone smuggling is a big problem. Officials say the "managed access system" will allow calls only to approved numbers. The Stiles Unit in Beaumont and the McConnell Unit in Beeville will get the blocking system by the end of the year.
DALLAS (AP) It's official: this has been the worst year ever for West Nile virus in Texas. Health officials say the state has recorded about 500 cases of the most serious form of the virus and at least 40 people have died. Officials expect the numbers to increase through mid-October.
SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) Roger Clemens will pitch to his oldest son Friday when he makes his second start for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner tells Houston television station KRIV that having Koby Clemens as his catcher in an Atlantic League game against Long Island is "cool stuff." The 50-year-old Clemens threw 3 1-3 scoreless innings for Sugar Land on Aug. 25, his first professional outing since 2007.
