KILLEEN, Texas (AP) Authorities say two Fort Hood soldiers are among three people who died in an apartment complex fire near the Central Texas Army post. A police spokeswoman said today investigators have not determined the cause of the early Friday fire. The two soldiers were from Ohio and had received military awards.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) After seeing rising numbers of babies born with syphilis, San Antonio health officials started assigning case workers to follow infected women throughout their pregnancies to make sure they get proper treatment. The STD often results in stillbirth. It is easily prevented though if the mother is diagnosed and treated with penicillin.

HOUSTON (AP) Houston police officers shot and wounded a man they thought had a gun after he refused to show his hands, made a quick movement and pulled out an object that turned out to be a cellphone. A police spokesman says the man was taken to the hospital Sunday night. The man was wounded in the lower leg.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Texas Tech basketball coach Billy Gillispie says doctors have ordered him to avoid any stress for 30 days to try to bring his blood pressure down. In a text message early Monday, Gillispie confirmed he'd been treated for kidney problems and abnormal headaches at the Mayo Clinic. He is on indefinite sick leave.
