HOUSTON (AP) Houston police officers shot and wounded a man they thought had a gun after he refused to show his hands, then pulled out an object that turned out to be a cellphone. A police spokesman says the man was hospitalized after the shooting on Sunday night. Authorities say it appears the man was trying to commit suicide by provoking the police.

HOUSTON (AP) Jurors have sentenced a Houston woman to two terms of life imprisonment after convicting her in the beating death of her four-year-old daughter. The Harris County jury sentenced 28-year-old Maciel Sandoval after less than two hours of deliberation yesterday. She was found guilty last Friday in the death of Betsabeth Sandoval.

HOUSTON (AP) Authorities say a woman shot and killed a man who began beating on her window following a minor traffic accident in Harris County. Deputy Thomas Gilliland tells the Houston Chronicle that Crystal Scott pulled into a gas station after yesterday's accident when the man began beating on her window. Scott then shot the man, who died at the scene.

KILLEEN, Texas (AP) Authorities say two Fort Hood soldiers from Ohio are among three people who died in a fire near the Central Texas Army post. Seth Micheal Soulsby and Christopher Sroka died early Friday morning in a fire that destroyed a Killeen apartment complex. Police say investigators haven't yet determined the cause of the blaze.
