EL PASO, Texas (AP) A West Texas woman sentenced to life in prison for the beating death of her three-year-old daughter could get another 99 years for not protecting the child. Closing arguments are scheduled today in the penalty phase for Yara Belen Perez. Jurors on Friday convicted Perez of capital murder in the 2007 death of Jacqueline Gonzalez.
PALESTINE, Texas (AP) Authorities say an autopsy has been ordered on human remains found in East Texas. The Anderson County Sheriff's Office says property owners near Palestine (PAL'-uhs-teen) discovered the remains Sunday night. Chief Deputy Troy Black says the remains are so decomposed that authorities couldn't immediately identify the person's race, sex or age.
BRYAN, Texas (AP) Investigators in Central Texas are trying to determine if bones dug up from a vacant lot are human remains from the 1960s. Bryan police yesterday announced the criminal investigation and excavation. Officials say the bones will be sent to a lab to determine if they are human or animal.
TYLER, Texas (AP) Authorities in East Texas are investigating at least two cases in which a woman lied about being a police officer and robbed someone. Tyler police are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect, who was not wearing a uniform. Police say the latest incident happened Sunday night at a car wash.
