AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas House Speaker Joe Straus presided over arguably the most-conservative legislative session in state history last year. Yet his bid for another term faces a challenge from the right, as in 2009. This time he's facing Republican Representative Bryan Hughes who says he's more conservative than Straus. The speaker may have to contend with his party's conservative wing while also appeasing Democrats, some of whom are angry about his leadership in 2011.

HOUSTON (AP) Houston police are investigating if there is a link between the killing of a 30-year-old Iranian activist nearly a year ago and the more recent shooting death of her boyfriend's twin brother. The Houston Chronicle reported yesterday that Coty Beavers was found dead in his Houston-area apartment on Monday. He was the twin brother to the boyfriend of slain Iranian human rights activist Gelareh Bagherzadeh.

DALLAS (AP) Dallas police are investigating an overnight shooting in which one person was killed and two others were wounded. The killing of a 31-year-old man early yesterday makes this November one of the deadliest in recent memory. The Dallas Morning News reports at least 13 homicides have occurred so far this month.

HOUSTON (AP) Houston Zoo staff have euthanized a 22-year-old African lioness, Celesto, who was born at the facility in 1990. The Houston Chronicle reported late Friday that Celesto had been sick for about two years. She was euthanized Friday morning after a decline in her kidney functioning.
