DALLAS (AP) Investigators in Dallas are trying to piece together just how a capital murder suspect managed to take a deputy's gun and escape from a hospital before he was cornered a mile away. Franklin Davis stole the deputy's revolver and fled Parkland Memorial Hospital last night before running away and eventually surrendering.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Leaders of an embattled $3 billion Texas cancer-fighting agency are meeting today for the first time since disclosing that a lucrative state grant was improperly awarded to a private company. The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is now facing more criticism after it was revealed that a Dallas biomedical company won $11 million in taxpayer funds without having its proposal vetted by experts.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Construction crews are laying down a boardwalk along the southern shore of the Colorado River in downtown Austin. The Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk Trail Project is part of the Butler Hike and Bike Trails project along the downtown lakefront. It's set to be done in 2014.

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) Former Texas Congressman Jack Brooks died last night in Beaumont after a sudden illness. The 89-year-old Democrat spent 42 years representing his Southeast Texas district. He was in the Dallas motorcade in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
