BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) Former Texas Congressman Jack Brooks has died at the age of 89. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says Brooks died last night at a hospital in Beaumont after a sudden illness. The Democrat spent 42 years representing his Southeast Texas district in the U.S. House.

DALLAS (AP) A capital murder suspect surrendered to authorities after officials say he took a deputy's gun and escaped from a Dallas hospital. Franklin Davis surrendered last night after a nearly two-hour standoff with police. Davis was awaiting trial in the death of 16-year-old Shania Gray.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) Bond has been set at $75,000 for a South Texas deputy U.S. marshal accused of blowing the cover of an undercover drug agent to his father. Prosecutors say the father is accused of being part of a drug trafficking organization. Deputy U.S. Marshal Lucio Osbaldo Moya faced up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) A new judge has been appointed to preside over the case of the Fort Hood shooting suspect. Army Colonel Tara Osborn was named yesterday to head the case of Major Nidal Hasan. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces on Monday ousted the previous judge saying he appeared biased against Hasan.
