DALLAS (AP) American Airlines pilots say their CEO is making his case for remaining an independent company, but the union still wants a merger with US Airways. The union says its board will meet with US Airways' top two executives next week. CEO Thomas Horton met for three hours today with directors of the Allied Pilots Association. Fort Worth-based American is the nation's third-biggest airline and US Airways is fifth-biggest.
ABILENE, Texas (AP) A West Texas police officer has fatally shot an armed gold-sales store employee while the department was serving a search warrant at the business. Authorities say the employee of Abilene Gold Exchange refused to put down his semi-automatic pistol when officers arrived this morning. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry has set a January 26th special election to fill the state Senate seat held by the late Senator Mario Gallegos. Gallegos, a Houston Democrat, died of liver disease on October 16th. It was too late to remove his name from the November 6th general election ballot and he was posthumously elected to another term.
IRVING, Texas (AP) Police in the Dallas suburb where a Cowboys player was killed in a car accident have released audiotapes of two 911 calls reporting the crash. Defensive tackle Josh Brent faces an intoxicated manslaughter charge in Saturday morning's accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown. Brent is free on bond. Police and prosecutors met today to discuss the case.
