HOUSTON (AP) Police say a traffic stop turned into a fatal shooting on Christmas Eve when a gunman killed a police officer and bystander in Houston. Authorities say Harlem Harold Lewis is suspected of killing 23-year police veteran Jimmie Norman as well as a bystander in the parking lot of a body shop. Lewis also was shot and is in critical condition but is expected to survive.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) Six children in Texas have been injured by an explosion that happened after gas was poured from a can onto an open fire pit. The McKinney fire department says at least one of the children sprinkled gasoline from a can onto the fire and left the can near the pit. The children range from ages 4 to 11.

HOUSTON (AP) Houston police have detained a man in connection with the shooting deaths of a 35-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter on Christmas Eve. Police say the suspect was detained yesterday and will be charged with capital murder. The identities of the victims or the suspect have not been released.

HOUSTON (AP) Brad Corbett, who owned the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1980, has died at age 75. His daughter told The Associated Press that her father died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas Eve. Corbett was known for frequently switching managers.
