HOUSTON (AP) A spokesman says former President George Herbert Walker Bush is in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital. Bush's spokesman, Jim McGrath, said this evening that the former president has been in the ICU at Methodist Hospital since Sunday. No other details were immediately provided. A bronchitis-like cough initially brought Bush to the hospital on November 23rd.
DALLAS (AP) The Department of Defense says a North Texas soldier has been killed in Afghanistan. Twenty-three-year-old Sergeant Enrique Mondragon of The Colony was fatally wounded by insurgent small arms fire on Christmas Eve in Baraki Barak, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based at Bamberg, Germany.
ABILENE, Texas (AP) Abilene police say a 34-year-old man has been shot and killed by his estranged girlfriend after he barged into her home. Police found Earnest Gonzales wounded early today in the front yard of the woman's home. He died later at a hospital. Authorities say Gonzales tried to break in Christmas night but fled before invading the home a second time later.
WACO, Texas (AP) High winds have taken off the top of a dead cottonwood tree at Lake Waco where a pair of nesting eagles has been building a home. Now federal and local officials tell the Waco Tribune-Herald that they're thinking about accelerating their plans to construct a sturdy 40-foot tower intended to provide a nesting area for the birds.
